Halifax  Sailing Club

Halifax Sailing Club is a friendly club, owned and run by members and is an RYA Recognised Teaching Establishment.  It was formed in 1959 and has the sole use of Yorkshire Water's Warley Moor Reservoir (known locally as Fly Flats).  The reservoir covers 90 acres, and being at an altitude of 410 meters enjoys clear winds, providing top quality sailing.

We currently have eight Sprint 15s at the club, all of which take to the water at some point in the season with an average of four taking part in handicap fleet racing each Sunday. There was a time when Sprints had their own start, a situation which may yet return. The club also holds racing on Wednesday evenings in the summer when Sprints also take part.

Local Attractions

  • Piece Hall, Halifax, originally the centre of the local cloth trade, now home to non-mainstream shops, arts, crafts and cafes.
  • Eureka! Childrens’ museum.
  • This is Bronte country and Howarth is only 10 miles away.
  • Hebden Bridge is just up the valley, with its picturesque town centre & craft shops (most of the witches who live there these days are white witches!).
  • There is always plenty of good beer to drink in “God’s own county”.

Finding Us

Make your way to the small village of Wainstalls (found on Google maps from "Wainstalls Halifax").

At the Delvers PH (the club's watering hole), take the right hand fork up Cold Edge Road, signposted to Withins.
Carry on up the hill & over the moor for a couple of miles
Cross the cattle grid next to the car park at the wind farm.
Follow the road and the reservoir can be seen down to the left.
The entrance is through a gate and down a track to the clubhouse where ample car parking is to be found.

Accommodation

Local accommodation is available, best found on the internet, with club members being happy to help out.
