Fun Events at Whitstable, 26-29 August 2002

Location: Whitstable Yacht Club, Kent.

As a pre-cursor to the following 3 day Nationals to be held at Whitstable, Nick has kindly offered to organise a few days of fun events. The cost is just £15 per boat (£25 if your entry form doesn't reach Bob Carter by 14th August!). Monday, 26th August, High Water 15.30

  • 15.00 WYC Dawes Trophy - Visitors welcome but not eligible for prizes

  • 18.00 Treasure Hunt - Explore the historic maritime seafront, suitable for all ages. See photo gallery of Whitstable at www.oysta.fsnet.co.uk

  • 20.00 Prize Giving at WYC Bar. NB Possible delay to 23.00.

  • 23.00 Bar closes

Tuesday, 27th August, High Water 16.00

  • 11.00 Crews Race - A short inshore course suitable for inexperienced sailors, who may be assisted by championship helms, acting only as crew

  • 12.30 Shipwrights Arms Race - A medium distance cruise westwards up the Swale estuary to this pub on Faversham Creek. See www.wyc.org.uk map on home page. Accessible by car for non-sailors. Bring beer money.

  • 19.00 Turner's Sunset - Best viewed from the WYC club-house, with an ample supply of liquid refreshment. Bar billiards, hot food & musak available. See photo gallery at www.oysta.fsnet.co.uk

  • 23.00 Bar closes

Wednesday, 28th August, High Water 16.30

  • 11.00 Herne Bay Race - Another medium distance cruise eastwards along the North Kent Riviera to our catamaran colleagues club along the coast. Bring shorts, flip-flops and small change to take advantage of traditional seaside parade. Accessible for non-sailors by car or by cycle along the coast.

  • 19.00 WYC Evening Series - Start off club line. Visitors also welcome

  • 23.00 Bar closes

Thursday, 29th August, High Water 17.00

  • 07.30 Coach Trip to France - Ferry leaves Dover for Calais at 9.15 Admire the White Cliffs, visit the Atlantic Wall Museum, lunch at Wimereaux with French catamaran colleagues. Don’t forget your passport and plastic money for restocking your wine vaults.

  • 20.30 Return trip leaves Calais (local time). Estimated at WYC at 22.00. Bargain at only £15 per person. Book with entry form as availability limited.

  • 23.00 Bar closes


Recommendations for Non-Sailors

1. Cycle the coastal path - Go East from Whitstable, up Tankerton Heights and on to Hampton Pier and Herne Bay, ideal viewing points during the Herne Bay cruise. Distance = 4 miles each way.

2. Garden of England mini-tour - Follow the recommended route including gardens at Mount Ephraim, Tudor village square and Inigo Jones stately home with gardens by Capability Brown at Chilham and historic Canterbury Cathedral

3. Walks - Drive west past Seasalter, and park your car by the Sportsman's pub, then walk west along the southern shore of the Swale to see the bird sanctuary in the marshes.
