Re: Standard sail vs. square top sail

On the Dart 15, with its hanky sized jib, I agree with others, take it down. The jib is so small, it only takes a minute or two, especially if you use a loop & monkey fist at the tack. On my larger Cats, (Nacra 5.7, Nacra 5.0, H18), I use a UV strip. It’s simply a 10” strip of material the loft ...

Re: Newcomer from Brittany

That looks like a decently kept boat. I have one over here in Canada, same vintage, same sail colours. I don’t know why anyone would use two jib sheets, instead of a continuous line. That only ensures the line will be dragging overboard when you want it. However, it’s a cheap fix. You will like the ...

Re: Hello from Spain, and question about mast ball and heel

Here’s what mine looked like, with original heel plate. It was an easy fix to replace it.

Re: Sport mode tips for the uninitiated

I should have also added that with most dog bones, you have two options to hook up. Most people set things up using the lower section of the dog bone. However, you can also hook the upper part of the bone onto your harness, the ring where the line attaches. This will give you a more upright position...

Re: Sport mode tips for the uninitiated

ver here, across the Pond, on the wire, or double trapped is the norm unless winds are light. When sailing the Nacra 5.7, H18, or even the Nacra 5.0 in higher wind, one simply cannot really power up the rig by sitting on a hull, & hiking out gets pretty tiring if you’re doing any distance. I use...

Well then, it’s only s similar reach across to Carrick-a-Rede, on the Irish Coast. A truly wonderful spot to visit. I don’t have the full intel, I’m assuming he is using one of his blue water boats, not the Sprint? Brings back fond memories of sailing a Rafiki 38 off the West Coast, & Gulf islan...

Re: Dart 15 pulls double duty

It’s only the 4th one I have ever seen over here, though there is a decent fleet of Dart 18’s scattered around Ontario. It was imported when a chap from Finley sail club immigrated to Canada. Most of my catamaran life I’ve been a Nacra sailor, with a stint on the Tornado. After I joined the North of...

Dart 15 pulls double duty

Tomorrow is July 1, AKA Canada Day here across the pond. My flagpole at the water edge was taken out by moving ice this spring, haven’t gotten around to replacing it. Decided to attach the flag to the main halyard, with a length of line to the flag bottom. Host til it hooks, tension & tie off th...

Re: Two piece masts problem solving

I forgot to mention, in your case Dave, drilling between the plug & base will not solve your problem if the leak is from the top of that section, AND the plug at the bottom is fully sealed. The water can't get past the bottom plug! You could invert the bottom section & see if the water will ...

Re: Two piece masts problem solving

Yes, there is a plug in the bottom section. My bottom section got filled with water last year, after I turtled the boat, stuck the mast in the mud & couldn't get it out til a powerboat came & gave me a tow. I needed to replace the small plate inside the mast base anyway, the one that is cont...

Re: Boat Width

As Corky posted, use "U" bolts, then you have flexibility. You can achieve a close enough measurement on skeg hulls by measuring across the top decks, from the centre of one hull to the centre of the other, as they are symmetrical. I have two other skeg hull Cats, a Nacra 5.7, & a Nacr...

where do you sail out of in the 'Kong?
I get over there a couple times a month. We used to stay at the Excelsior, by the Noon Gun, but are now back in Mongkok at the Langham.

Re: Mast Ball Tolerance

Hi Chris Hull number 1641 would make your Sprint 15 a 'Fashion' model, like mine 1615, with the three coloured blocks on the outer surfaces of the hulls. In your earlier photo they all look the same colour, is that a transfer over the original blocks as I haven't seen anything other than a purple, ...

Re: Mast Ball Tolerance

I have researched old results and I cannot find any reference to 1641 (or 1642 as mentioned by Paul Roddock in the NewSprint article) so I cannot help with the correct sail number of your boat. We have been to Filey S C a number of times on our traveller events but 1641 or 1642 did not enter. Bob I...

Re: Mast Ball Tolerance

Thanks for that information Bob. I have greased things up, my boats stay rigged in the back yard all season. I read on one of the chats about preventing wear by leaving the step pin in place if you store mast up. During a layover in China I spent considerable time downloading/reading all the old New...
