Harness hopping!!

Post by Brian Phipps »

Following the request for more info on "Harness Hopping" here goes.
Harness hopping is a form of extending your all up crew leverage by positioning the "heavier" sailor on the spreader bar of the other sailor when leaning out on the righting line. The effect is greater righting leverage. It does not come without a few technical skills that need to be practised! , but allows light teams to right their boat in the most demanding of conditions ie. no wind. During tests at Windsport a few years ago a 90kg all up team could right a H16 which has one of the heaviest rigs around.
Of course you need two people so not much good if you are sailing a Sprint 15 single handed !!! but we have a answer for that as well, which does not involve stinger poles, adjustable rigs etc . All this adds up to making the Sprint15 an even more of all round boat for the young family, what we cannot change is the physical challenge of moving the boat around the dinghy park, launch and recovery, that often needs the support of mum or dad!
If you want to learn more, sign up for the Sprint15 teachin or get yourself down to the Windsport coaching centre.
All the best
