Rumour about Erling

Post by Bob Carter »

Any truth in the rumour that Erling needs a new sail and he needs it fast?

Real pity that his numbers were still showing, otherwise he might have got away with it.

I just publish the pictures dispassionately and in an unbiased manner.

I'm looking forward to hearing a ripping yarn at Yaverland sometime over the weekend - it must have been due to something almost unbelievable for a good sailor like Erling to finish up with a sail looking like that!

It would be genuinely interesting to know how such damage occurred. I don't think I have ever seen (or not seen) such a sail. Hope it is soon sorted Erling.

Bob'

Erling's improved since you retired.

And my opinion is in NO way influenced by his imminent (and eminent) presence on the Sport Nationals Committee Boat!

Hmmm. Clearly Erling does far too much sailing and this is the result.

We could run a competition on who can come up with the best story on how Erling achieved such a total wreckage of his sail.
To start it off here is my view.
Erling (well known for loud exclamations whilst racing) was once heard to complain that the Dolphins which chose to accompany our fleet in a race at Swanage were giving other (than Erling) members of our fleet an unfair advantage by pushing them along while not helping Erling at all. Well this time I reckon he found Jaws who took it out on his sail after a capsize.

Erling's Sail

As told by Erling, he capsized very close ahead of a following boat. It was so close that although its helm took avoiding action the following boat couldn't be steered quickly enough to leeward, with the result that one (or both?) of its rudders sliced through Erling's sail in the water. Apparently no damage to mast, so Erling's boat was presumably on its way through 90 degree to 180 degree full inversion.

Unlucky!

PS They seem quite keen on accidental sail damage at Shanklin - what with 1347's sail being crucified (picture somewhere in http://www.shanklinsailingclub.com/pict ... erland.php). I hope Shanklin's claims experience doesn't put my insurance premiums up.........
