Rudders

Post by Bob Carter »

It is very straightforward to convert these to the Sprint 15 if you are short of rudders............

I hadn't realised they need alteration. What needs to be done?

Hi Howard,

For no explicable reason, when the Spark was designed the transoms were raked at a different angle to the transom of the Dart, despite the apparent intention to use Dart rudder assemblies and blades on the Spark (I would have expected the rudder blades would work best at the angle for which they were first designed on the Dart!). In order that the tiller arms would be at a sensible angle over the Spark transoms and rear beam it was necessary to use a longer sleeve (see http://www.windsport.co.uk/modules/item ... img_id=629) which slides over the tiller post on the upper rudder stock casting (the Dart part which will be on these Ebay advertised rudders will be as per http://www.windsport.co.uk/modules/item ... img_id=933). It's my understanding that this is the only difference between the Sprint 15 and Dart 18 rudder assemblies, and you would need to replace the shorter sleeves on these advertised rudders to use them on a Sprint 15.

If you look at "Section 4" page (http://www.sprint15.com/manuals/parts_list/section4.jpg) of the manuals on this website (it uses Lase Centre part numbers...) you can see the critical differences.

Hope this helps (I suspect that if it does, it may increase competition in the Ebay auction........)

When looking at Ebay I found another Ebay ad for Dart 18 parts. It's a "bulk" sale of parts for which the seller is asking £1000, but indicates a willingness to split. The list of parts includes rudders, tiller conbar and tiller extension. The Dart 18 conbar will be too long for a Sprint 15, but I think it would only need cutting to length. If you are interested, see http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dart-18-race- ... 33a8540adc.

Thanks George. As it happens I'm not proposing to bid for them, I was just intrigued that they needed modification.

conversion from D18 to Sprint 15 an visa-versa requires replacement sleeve and rudder hook, depending on just how old the system is.

well it turns out by a stroke of luck, these rudders i bought for my dart18 as spares were in actual fact dart 15 rudders. after double checking with Brian.
turns out the guy didnt know who sold them too me. and sold as dart18
like brian said the collar and hook is the only thing to swap over, i measured mine at 67mm which is the dart 15 size.
stroke of luck on my part, but had to drill the rivets out to swap and then found out . never mind.
