Hi Steve
I tidy up the damaged area with 400 grade, clean up with acetone, then repair with gel coat filler. Once set, rub down the excess gel starting with 400, working your way up to 600, 800 and finish with 1000 or 1200 grade paper. Always use a cork sanding block to give an even sanding surface area. You can bring back the shine to your hull or rudder with a cutting polish followed by a wax polish.
Don't use coloured polish designed for a car, it'll be absorbed straight into your newly repaired area spoiling the finish.
