IMPORTANT - update to registration procedure

Post by admin »

Well I've spent many hours over the last few days switching our website chat pages over from my home grown system to a more advanced "off the shelf" forum software, mainly to try and beat the spammers.

2 days in and we get our first post advertising porn sites. I'm afraid I have to give up at this point - apparently the latest thing is that people are paid to hack into web chat pages to post this rubbish. This means that as long as you have a registration system that is human readable, you can't defeat the spammers.

Most of the spam we get is American - its a shame that the U.S. authorities seem to turn a blind eye to it and can't be a***d to try and solve the problem.

I have now switched the registration to "admin approved", which means anyone wanting to join up fills in the registration form and will have to wait for me to approve their account before they can post messages.

Sorry about that - but we can't let our website be constantly defaced.

I have activated all the accounts of people who have signed up so far, and will try to process new accounts as soon as possible.

Looks good to me - well done.

Delays in Registration too account activation

Post by admin »

Folks,

New forum members may find it takes a few days to activate your account there are a couple of reasons for this:

1) I'm pretty busy at work and at home these days so finding the time to go through everything takes a little doing.

2) We get about 200 forum join requests per day 99.9999% of these are from spammers. About every other week we get a genuine join request but sorting through and removing all the spammers requests takes time.

3) Very occasionally a geniune request maybe deleted by accident. So if you haven't heard after a couple of weeks please send an email to the webmaster and I'll see whats what.

Hope that helps,

Martin Searle

I agree with Bryn. It is a great site and appreciate the efforts it takes to keep the spammers at bay.

I am also a memeber of the H5.9 forum and the Sprint 15 site is much easier to use, a lot more active and has better content.

Keep it up.
