3 boat length rule - new RRS

Post by Steve Willis »

Charles,

I propose to use the 3 boat length rule for marks unmodified as in the new RRS. I presume that until such time as any Class changes are agreed (if any) that will be OK for the SSC TT Notice of Race.

Hi
As I see it the new RSS comes into effect on 1 Jan 2009 and since it defines the zone as 3 boat lengths I don't think we have to do anything. It will automatically apply.
Cheers

3 boat length ruling

Post by Andrew Hannah »

Please could someone elaborate the 3 boat length ruling for me? Is it simply a replacement of the 2 boat length rule for rounding marks?

I think you need to have sight of the rewritten Rule 18. Its a little more involved than that but should actually make things simpler. As always the Bryan Willis Rules in Practice makes good bed time reading!

RRS changes

Post by Steve Willis »

Andrew,

I agree with Martin it is worth going through the guide document from the RYA as there are a number of changes to make in SIs - for example no more 'buoyancy aids' it is all 'personal flotation devices' now.

The wording on some rules relating to rights at marks is changed, supposedly to clarify them.

Hi Steve,

It will take me some time to get used to "personal flotation device".

During the war, my father was issued with a "Mae West", which was a delightful name. It lingered for long after, and was certainly in use when I started sailing.

lifejacket

Post by Steve Willis »

Yes I know what you mean (my father had the same on minesweepers before he moved on to other land based stuff).

To me they will always be lifejackets - early memories of several Atlantic crossings in very poor weather on Queen Mary and Saxonia as a young boy.
