Folks,

To add in an avatar image you first need to get a file which meets the following requirements:

1) upto 120x120 pixels in size
2) no larger than 10kb

In the top left corner of the forum page you will see User Control Panel, click this.
Click the Profile tab
Click Edit Avatar

To upload your avatar file from your machine click browse and select it then click the submit button, if it doesn't meet the criteria you are told what is wrong and the file is not uploaded. If everything is OK then the file is uploaded and appears in the box on the screen thus its active.

You can upload as many avatars as you want and can choose between pictures by clicking the Display Gallery button.

Well done Martin - Happy new year.

I was tempted to use my Land Rover forum avatar as it goes faster than my 15 but the process of uploading was the same as for that site.

Great idea Martin! Can you recommend software to shrink a file size as far as 10k and 120x120? Photoshop would do it but I don't have a W7 version and it means walking upstairs. Picasa doesn't go small enough and Shrink Pic only gets me down to 46k.

Hi Robert,

I use ACDSee9 which has a 'Resize' function in the tools sub menu to define the pixels (it keeps the aspect ratio).

This got me to 14kB. Then when I used 'save as' there is an options button in the 'save as' menu that lets you choose the compression factor. The factor is at 85% as standard so I set it to 20% and this reduced the file size to 7kb.

I have several other packages that allow similar 'resize' and compression factors in slightly different ways and I think most do. Resize is not the same as crop - it changes the pixel resolution but keeps the whole photo

My original photo was 750kb with my boat as one in a fleet, I cropped that to my boat and then resized and compressed.

Hope this may be of help.

Steve

Thanks Steve, that's pretty clear and I might well get ACDSee 9 but my slightly northern "Owmuch?" tendency has got my grey cell working (a bit). If I go upstairs and just turn on the PC then I can use "remote desktop connection" to acquire and reduce the image remotely, then post it here from my laptop. :D Wonder how long it will take me to get round to it?
