Sealing a mast

I am trying to make a new bottom section mast by cutting a snapped one piece mast and just wondered if anyone knew what was the proper way to seal it?
Paul tricky work but basically it is a series of shaped bungs with sickaflex or similar squeezed between them. It does need a good seal as the pressure when inverted can soon fill either section. Once you have had a go suggest you test it in some water.
