Boat Owner Certification. For your info.

Post by Brian Phipps »

As some Sprint15 / Dart15 / Spark owners may know the original measurement certification system fell over some years ago before Windsport took took over from Laser. We now have boats that have been mixed and matched in both sail numbers and hulls, with measurements certificates lost or not up to date.
The result of all that is since Windsport took over the sale of new boats both Dart 18 and Sprint 15 boats have been issued with a "owners certificate", detailing the sail number, hull numbers / colour and mast number the boat was originally issued with. Provided the owner keeps this up to date they have proof of ownership , which is what the authorities are all about.
Without proof of ownership it could be tricky to cross boarders as you could be stealing a boat or part of a boat!!
So if you want / need that certificate of ownership Windsport can issue one, what we need is reasonable proof ie, pictures of :-
1) Picture of hulls
2) Picture of hull number
3) Picture of mast number
4) Picture of sail number
5) Owners contact details
There is small admin charge of £12.00.
We then also keep this information on file.

At the Carnac event, whilst it is good to have this proof of ownership, I would suggest it is more important to have your membership of your federation , ie RYA with you. This they understand and expect as all French sailors have to be members of the French Sailing Federation if they race.

As a note, in the past they have stated you must produce your boat insurance details. From experience they do not look at this but put it in an envelope and keep it until collected at the end of the regatta. This is to stop people who might cause damage from clearing off without exchanging details with a third party.
Windsport would suggest you take a photo copy of your insurance details and give them that, then you do not have to remember to collect the master copy at the end of the event.
Things might of changed but you can go prepared.

I've a letter and three digit number stamped on the rear surface of the mast base-plate. Is that the mast ID? What if you change the base-plate?

Not very tidy but I've used a punch to put my sail number onto the bottom of my mast, near the base plate. Got the photos, just need to find the thingy to transfer them to my iPad, then they are off to Cornwall. Cheers Brian. Have the RYA thing now. This is getting exciting. Going to take an old main halyard for a tow rope. It can be secured to the end of the existing halyard and both secured to the mast ball should the need arise.

Hi ,the masts supplied by windsport have a number stamped on the plate at the top, in the past masts have been stamped at or near the base. There is nothing to stop you adding your own ID number as Robert has just done.
