What happened was... 
the database got overloaded and fell over. Had to wait for Webfusion to reset it.
I did manage to get the main web site back running fairly quickly but I couldn't restore this forum until the old database was prodded with a stick.
The database has now been split in two which should balance the load and make this half as likely to happen.
