Committee News - Tributes to Nick Dewhirst
Date Posted: 20th August 2013 at 14:48 pm

Nick Dewhirst's funeral took place on Friday 2 August and took the form of a celebration of Nick's life. There was a huge attendance including many Sprint 15 sailors and the speeches were very moving showing a wide range of Nick's achievements and interests. Sissy and Nick's family were very brave and made the theme the celebration of Nick's life.

The Class Association Committee have been working on the following tributes to Nick to recognise his huge contribution to the Sprint 15 Fleet over nearly 30 years.

1) We have renamed the Nationals Championship Trophy the "Nick Dewhirst Shield" - see pictures attached.  It was at our National Championship prize giving that Nick was at his absolute best and so what finer way of remembering him could there be than on the name of our top award in the Class.

2) We are retiring our Winter Traveller Trophy and are replacing it with a fine silver cup called the "Dewhirst Cup" - see picture. We have transferred all the past results so that the history is not lost.

3) A new Flag has been made with "2006" (Nick's boat's sail number) on it. This flag will be used as the Class Flag in the starts at the upcoming National Championships at Pentewan.

4) Our Autumn magazine will include a special feature on Nick and his life.

Doubtless other tributes will be made but we just wanted to appraise the class members of the actions we have in progress.

Note: Some time ago we presented Nick with the original Peter Mayne Trophy for exceptional services to the fleet. The Peter Mayne Trophy is a fine carved plaque we present for special achievements over the the normal line of duty. It is presented for a year or so until it is next awarded but we commissisioned a new one to be made and donated the old one to Nick for exceptional services to the fleet. This was like a life time achievement award and it is good that we did it in his lifetime so he got to know how much we appreciated him.
