Sprint15 Race Class coaching

Post by Brian Phipps »

Those Sprint 15 sailors who attened the race coaching last weekend at Stewartby experienced 2 days of intensive around the course sailing skills. The challenge now is to put those actions into practise on the race course at club and Sprint15 events.
1) Start on the front line 2) make sure your boat is ready to go 3) Plan your mark roundings 4) change of pressure=change of sail setting.
Well done to all who attened.
See you on the water

Hi Brian,

As one of the attenders I'd like to say thank you, again, for the benefit of your training last weekend. We were a disparate bunch as regards Sprint 15 experience, and the wind forecast meant that you had to rearrange your "normal" coaching schedule of off and on water activities to cope with the distinct possibility that much of Sunday might be virtually windless. It also didn't help that the light to lower end of medium breezes on the Saturday were almost as "up and down" and shifty as the much lighter breezes were on the Sunday (after the morning hours of close to calm conditions!). I thought it all worked out fairly well, despite these problems.

In hindsight, I should have brought a pad and pen to make notes (during the onshore sessions, and immediately after coming ashore from on the water sessions). I'd suggest that future attenders of your training courses do this, so that they have something to look up afterwards - there was a lot to remember, and I'm worried that my forgettory is working better than my memory.

I'd also like to thank Mark Norman, who put in far more time than was credible, both driving you around Stewartby Water in the rib and joining us on the Saturday night (Mark was still busy at the Club when we left on the Sunday, and had come to the Club 3 times before the event to let arrivals at different times into the Club and the grounds). Also we must thank Mark's daughters for being around both days in the Galley - altogether a family effort that few could match.

The next Traveller is next weekend at Marconi. Currently the wind forecast looks much like what we experienced at Stewartby on the Sunday, which isn't going to be easy in the tidal Blackwater Estuary......

Well said George, again my thanks to Mark, Brian and the canteen girls for looking after us over the weekend.
I'm glad I took the mini digital video recorder, the boat tuning sessions were excellent and I well worth preserving :D .

I could do with a race rules book thats easy to read (and up to date unlike mine), any suggestions?

Regards

Kevin 1615.

bit thick I know but a good book is the RYA book. "The racing Rules explained" isbn 978-1-906435-18-9
hope that helps, it is bit more than just racing rules.

I'm with George and Kevin on this one. Thoroughly enjoyed the training weekend, learned more than I'd have believed possible but felt my advancing age on Monday morning! I had a 100 mile bike event this Sunday, the best option in view of the weather at Marconi; a real pleasure to have no wind to ride against! My thanks to Brian, Mark Norman and daughters and to Bob Carter for keeping the early planning alive. My sail needs updating.
