Rudder repair

Post by Derek James »

Well I was really enjoying the racing at Stewartby until I stupidly damaged my rudders  I have ordered pintle repair kits from windsport but does anyone have any advice on how to repair the fibre glass blade itself . I have a 100mm spilt along the joint line at the bottom of one of the blades . I have dried out in airing cupboard and just cleaned the joint out with sandpaper . So the next step is to glue together . What should I use , resin , expoxy , superglue ?
Also any tips in fitting pintle repair kit appreciated !
Cheers
Derek

Hi Derek,
On the rudder use 2 part resin for fibre glass on the rudder blade. Make sure that you clamp it together around the edges near the split while it dries to maximise the bonding area.
Sorry, I have never done the pintle repair. I expect either Brian or Steve will add advice for this but I think both are on holiday at present.
Regards

Hi Derek, if you give me call we can chat through a few things to check before fitting the pintle repair kit and how best to reassemble.
When repairing glass work it is worth knowing that the resins used to laminated Sprint 15 hulls and rudder blades is polyester based. Epoxy will glues and resins will bond to polyester, but if you need to do a further repair it is much harder to get polyester to bond to epoxy. Where ever possible we would suggest using what ever type of resin the moulding was originally made with.
Hope that helps.

Just finished repairing and refurbishing my rudders , thanks for all of the tips . My top tips for anyone else thinking about refurbishing their rudders are ;
1. Remove rudder blade from stock and bring into house to completely dry out
2. Clear out split in bottom of blade with a thin knife and a sheet of fine sandpaper folded in half , really clean out the split and file out split with folded sandpaper
3. I tried gluing two halves of blade with resin which was unsuccessful . Use Areldite , it works really well and is tougher than resin , also fills any small chips
4. Get the service pintle kit from Brain ( Windsport ) , it has all the parts you will need .
5. I recon that most people with boats of a certain age will need to replace the locking lift wire and just as importantly rudder lock spring cover sleeve . I cannot emphasis how important these two small components are !
6. I cobbled together a pintle bracket that fits into my workmate for ease of rudder blade working / assembly
7. Probably not necessary but i drilled out and removed the rivets that hold in the tiller arm end bracket , makes installing the lifting cable hooks so easy
8.Adjust main and end bracket bolt tension to remove excess play but allow free movement .
9. Finally spray copiously with quality silicone spray ALL parts that move
Took me two days to refurb blades and rudder stocks .
Back to sailing next week .
