Story behind the name !

Post by Kimberley1407 »

Hi,
New member to the fleet.

I am currently going through my new to me Dart 15 1081.
I can very very faintly make out her previous name (which looks like!) " Fifty Five Quid"

I can also very faintly make out "Beacuet" which is in the Channel Islands.

Does anyone know the previous owners prior to Kevin Widdowson who I purchased her from, and the story behind the name!

Thank you for your warm welcome

Hi Kimberley

Welcome to the fleet! Fifty Five Quid spent some time at Marconi SC in Essex owned by Peter Richardson - who is a long time stalwart of the fleet. I am not sure of the exact back story - but I believe she was in a sorry state when Pete picked her up for the princely sum of £55 - hence the name. He did a lot of work on her and got her back to sailing again. Pete did sail her for a time before selling it on and buying a newer second hand boat.

Pete is not on the forum but we can let him know that she is still sailing!

Thank you Jenny,
I have also been in contact with Bob Carter who has been able to fill in some of the story and he has passed my email address onto Peter.

This was my reply (slightly corrected)
Hi Kim,

Yes, "Fifty Five Quid" was owned by Peter Richardson. Peter is a Yorkshire man but now lives down south and sails at Marconi SC in Essex. Being a Yorkshire man Peter is careful with his money and is fond of a bargain. On a holiday in Devon many years ago (30 plus) Peter came across the boat somewhat derelict at a Sailing school based on a ship, the Egremont, moored in the Salcombe Harbour. See the link below.

Salcombe to say 'farewell' to the Egremont | kingsbridge-today.co.uk

I'm not sure if the boat was complete but it was stoored on the Egremont so was dry. Anyway Peter bought the boat for a bargain price of £55 took it to Beaver SC and sorted it out. He was so proud of getting it for such a bargain price he named it after the price he paid. It was used for many years at Beaver and then Marconi for training and as a tryout boat to convice other sailors to buy Dart 15s.
I hope that you enjoy sailing her.
Regards
Bob
