Live tracking at the Nationals?

Post by Martin Searle »

Folks,

From an idea by Robert England I have investigated possibly using live events tracking at the nationals. MapMyTracks.com seemed to offer a good service for doing just this. There were two options that were available: a free mode called Hubs with basic tracking and stats for individuals and a paid for event setup which could do a lot more at a price. I had a meeting with the software developers since they have an office in the Innovation Centre at the University of Kent (where I work!).

I think we should trial it using the free mode in Wales and then take stock.

The system uses an app installed on a smart phone (it can be an android phone or an iphone amongst others), you then use the app to login to the site and join a TAG (as they call it). Everyone would join the same tag and apparently we could set up tags like S15Race1, S15Race2 etc for each of the races. You would need to take the phone with you on the water.

Viewers of the Sprint15 website during the race will see live tracking of the racing on the water for all people using the app. Apres race you would then be able to review your progress as well as viewing stats like top speed, distance travelled and so forth.

Have a look at www.mapmytracks.com. Register your interest via this chat thread (as well as discussing the idea)

Thanks,

Round the Island Race used an excellent system: http://ngtrack2.ngresults.co.uk/raceplayer/

Worked on Android, Windows and iDevices. Eats batteries though.

But Martin, I'll know where I am... being told I'm going the wrong way by Elenya!

Seriously though, sounds like a great idea for family not in Pwllheli but even if I had a smartphone, I go sailing to get away from technology.

Bah humbug !

I'll still be interested to see what it looks like for the brave who take their precious phones out with them (think of all that extra weight... I'll take a pie with me to make things more even!!!).

Need a new phone, so could be tempted - or maybe I could "borrow" one...
replaying the tracks would be fun.
