Recommendations please.

Post by hhawkes »

I'm thinking of investing in a pair of handheld VHF radios and also a camcorder. A degree of water-resistance is a must, although they'll be used on a safety boat rather than a Sprint.

Any suggestions please?

Howard Hawkes.

Icom do floating handheld VHF radios. They are very easy to use and will last you all day.

There's plenty of cheap video cameras about but the one to go for if you can spare the money is a GoPro.

We use Icom radios on our patrol boats (nice that their base is only 10 miles from us). They are also what the Coastguard use. No need for aquapac bags, just hang from a lanyard around the neck.

Before they came out with the floating ones one of our PB crew dropped one overboard as he climbed into the PB before sailing started and it sank. We found it on the shoreline 3 hours later, after the tide went out, and it was (and is 3 years later) still OK. Not cheap but good.

Just wash them off under a fresh water tap and towel them dry after use.
