Sail batten legality

Post by dave42w »

Our #4 batten got broken (not quite into 2 pieces) sometime on our summer holiday.

I had a spare and have cut it to length and fitted it.

The original had foam stuck to it but clearly not where it hit the shroud and snapped. Rather than buy sticky foam from Windsport, at least for the moment, I've slipped an old bike inner tube over the batten and held it on with insulation tape.

Am I legal? Because this is a very simple and cheap solution if so.

Since any protest has got to get past Jenny, I don't reckon its chances too highly.

Have you got a knot in your mainsheet? Putting a knot in the rope so it can't go any further out than it needs to should help reduce breakages.

Dave, Strictly speaking it is out of class but is so trivial that I cannot imagine anyone protesting.

That is true in strong winds but it limits the sail setting range in light winds.........

Thanks!

No knot but I have shortened the mainsheet (and traveller sheet) a lot.

Anyone who wants to protest because I have a cheap hack that is probably heavier than the spec is welcome :-)

So where is the right place? So no batten touches a shroud even in a stronger wind when the sail twists more?

I have mine so it is the right position for downwind sailing in light wind on a unarig boat - which I think should be sail touching the shroud.
